The Outstanding

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen,

What a beautiful day to be alive in Southern California! Just yesterday I was in the Petroleum Engineering courtyard and I saw the most amazing little hummingbird. Anyway, back on topic…

I have some tremendous (but not altogether unexpected) news to report. The University of California student chapter of the International Society of Petroleum Engineers has been awarded the organization’s highest honor, the aptly named Outstanding Student Chapter Award.

Winning the Outstanding Award affirms us as being “in-standing” with the top 10% of Student Chapters worldwide. 7 billion people on this planet and we’re outstanding, that’s heavy!

Chapters were selected based on their performance in 5 categories: Industry Engagement, Operations and Planning, Community Involvement, Professional Development, and Innovation. Charisma and Style also used to be a category but it was removed after it would have given us an unfair advantage over other clubs.

For our readers further afield, let me give you a quick rundown of our path to success:

In this writer’s humble opinion, our strongest suit was Industry Engagement. Our lecture series of engaging and thoughtful industry professionals and academics was an important source of information and exposure for many of our members. In addition to this, our continuing relationship with the Los Angeles Basin Section has been vital to our growth and continued success. They have been very generous and nurturing to our program and we extend to them our heartiest thanks.

Community Involvement was also a source of great pride for us and will certainly be an area we continue to invest in and expand on. Our projects with the LA homeless and El Segundo Beach cleaning are perfect examples of our commitment to community and the environment. I personally look forward to introducing new and renewing past initiatives with the tenacity that oilfield workers are famous for.

Lastly, USC does an amazing job of molding and producing the world’s finest petroleum engineers, no debate there. However, our professional development team took it upon themselves to bring in some really world class workshops to assist our members in becoming their best professional selves. We continue to consider this a core mission and I look forward to seeing what the Professional Development team cooks up for us in the coming months.

That’s all for now ladies and gentlemen. Now that we are #1, the eyes of the world will be on us for many months. The energies of our students and supportive alumni aim to prosecute our goals this upcoming semester in the strongest possible terms and continue our winning ways. Stay tuned, you’re not going to want to miss it.
